AMARILLO, TX - Starting with the 2011- 2012 school year, the Amarillo Independent School Distract will recognize Martin Luther King Junior day as a holiday for both students and staff.
This makes AISD the largest employer in Amarillo to observe the federal holiday. The city has observed the holiday since 2005.
In Tuesday night's board meeting, school board member James Allen, thanked the district's leadership for pushing to have the federal holiday as a day off on the district calendar.
"I would love for it to have a domino effect. I think if people look at the significance for what he did for our country, I feel like its a natural progression." said Allen.
Wednesday, we called around and checked with area schools to see how their calendars stand for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year.
As of now, no other area district has MLK day listed as a holiday in their drafted calendars.
The Canyon Independent School District tells NewsChannel 10, it tries to shift its calendar with the consensus of area employers and districts.
