HOUSTON (AP) — Democrat Bill White, who failed to unseat GOP Gov. Rick Perry, says he will not run for U.S. Senate in 2012 and is trying to figure out what to do next.
White told the Houston Chronicle, for Monday editions, that since the election he has been busy planning a family Christmas trip and considering what his business plans will be. The former Houston mayor did not offer specifics.
"I don't have anything in mind," he said. "But I have to figure out whether I principally manage investments in businesses or run the businesses, and then, if I run the business, what kind of business. For investments, the world that I know best is almost anything related to energy, and to some extent real estate. I also know how to run things ... and I enjoy building things."
White, 56, has practiced law, managed hedge funds and run energy companies.
Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, who's been in the Senate since 1993, failed in her GOP primary bid for governor and said she will serve out her third term, which ends in 2012.
"I'm not running in 2012," said White. He also said he has no plans to try again for governor or for a Senate seat in 2014, when Republican John Cornyn faces re-election.
White initially ran for Senate because he believed Hutchison had decided not to seek re-election. When she decided to stay in the Senate while contesting Perry for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, White decided to run for governor.
Perry ended up winning 55 percent of the vote on Nov. 2.
White said he will stay involved in public policy issues as Texas faces an anticipated budget shortfall, but is not seeking a position in the Obama administration, but he will stay involved in public policy issues as Texas faces an anticipated budget shortfall. Legislators convene in January in Austin.
The former Texas Democratic Party chairman expects the party to rebound from midterm election losses.
"The pendulum will swing in Texas," he said, "and there's a lot of people who want a sort of traditional, more fiscally conservative Texas Democrat," said White.
