Amarillo, Texas - An Amarillo man has been taken to a hospital for evaluation after an early morning standoff.

Police arrived at a house on Cyprus Point at about five this morning. A concerned relative had reported the 46-year-old male resident was suicidal, drinking and was armed.

Officers tried to talk to him.

Corporal Jerry Neufeld of the Amarillo Police Department says, "At one point he goes into the garage residence and the officers hear shots fired from inside. There was probably anywhere from five to ten shots fired inside the residence. To our knowledge he wasn't shooting anyone outside. But the shots were coming from inside the residence."

During the standoff, police had to evacuate nearby houses and shut down surrounding roads.

Neighbor March Richardson says, "Got a call, a frantic call from my son who said the police knocked on the door and told him and his brother to leave the house."

SWAT members entered the home, found the man passed out on the couch and took him into custody.

Police say the incident remains under investigation and charges may be filed at at later date
