AMARILLO---Construction begins on a new pump station for the City of Amarillo's Potter County Well Field project.

The city is hoping to provide an additional 20 million gallons of water a day to residents by next summer.

Right now, crews are building the pump station, its the center of the development.  When finished the pump will feed water from 21 area wells into the city.

Officials tell NewsChannel 10, this new water supply is needed as the city continues to grow, especially with our water sources depleting.

"It guarantees and ensures our supply for the future in growth. It gives us the ability to attract industry. It will gives us an opportunity to compete for other jobs." said Floyd Hartman with the City of Amarillo.

This part of the project has a price tag of about 7.8 million dollars.  Those funds were granted by the Texas Water Development Board.

Next month, the city will start to lay a pipeline that will flow the water to Amarillo from the pump that's 18 miles northeast of the city.
