Ad in NM gov race focuses on medical marijuana

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A group supporting New Mexico's medical marijuana program is airing a television advertisement against Republican gubernatorial nominee Susana Martinez for her opposition to the program.

The Drug Policy Action Fund for New Mexico is paying for the ad, which is to run during the final week of the campaign.

Martinez has said she would try to repeal New Mexico's medical marijuana law, which was enacted in 2007.

Martinez is the district attorney in Dona Ana County, and she contends that New Mexico's program violates federal law that prohibits the distribution and use of marijuana.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish supports the state law allowing the use of marijuana for pain or other symptoms of illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and HIV-AIDS.
