Debate Apathy

AUSTIN, TEXAS - The Texas gubernatorial candidates squared off in their only debate Tuesday night - but one of the major players wasn't there.

Up until today there was speculation among most political experts that current governor Republican Rick Perry would change his mind about the debate, but this morning his camp reiterated he would not appear. That left three other candidates to clash over Texas' top issues.

Those were the democrat Bill White, libertarian Kathie Glass and the green party's Deb Shafto. The reason perry says he did not show is because his main contender white has not released all of his tax returns.

Because Perry was not there, many media outlets seem to be writing off the debate. It did not air at all in the Dallas-Fort Worth television market, and in Houston it won't show until hours afterwards on PBS, well after primetime TV is over.
