"Rural Kids at Disadvantage"

AMARILLO, TEXAS - Students in rural areas are at a significant educational disadvantage according to a national group spreading that alert.

The After school Alliance says there is a big disparity between rural and urban America when it comes to enrollment in after school programs - because of it, they argue kids' safety and intellectual futures are at higher risk in the rural places like here. That's something most local experts seem to agree with.

According to the after school alliance about one in ten kids in rural areas go to after school programs - compare that to one in five of their urban counterparts.

Local program leaders say they are battling two problems - first people in rural areas typically make less money and have trouble affording after school care. Second, most of the larger grants out there to help are extremely competitive and usually won by programs in bigger cities.
