NM voter registration increases 6% since 2006

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The latest voter registration figures show that more than 1.1 million New Mexicans are eligible to cast votes in the November general election.

The number of qualified voters has increased about 6% since 2006, which was the last gubernatorial election.

The secretary of state's office has posted the latest registration figures on its website, http://www.sos.state.nm.us.

Democrats account for 49% of registered voters. That's unchanged from 2006. Republicans represent 32% of the electorate and were at 33% in 2006.

About 16% of voters are unaffiliated with any political party - up from 15% in 2006.

Other political parties, including Libertarians, account for 3% of registered voters. That's up from 2% in 2006.
