Residents Not Happy With Low-Level AF Flight Plan

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) ¯ A proposed low-level flight training route for Air Force pilots across northern New Mexico and southern Colorado received a decidedly negative reaction at a public meeting in Santa Fe on Thursday night.

Noise, cost and the possible impact on adobe buildings were among the concerns residents voiced to a cadre of Air Force officials.

The Air Force wants to fly C-130 Hercules and smaller CV-22 Osprey aircraft from Cannon Air Force Base through the mountains and valleys of the region. The planes would avoid towns, airports and wilderness area but could fly as low as 200 feet.

Several rural residents said eliminating those zones would funnel the planes through their areas.

The Air Force is holding a series of public meetings as it gathers comments on its plan.
