White calls for halt in new fund applications

FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas gubernatorial candidate Bill White says Gov. Rick Perry should immediately freeze all new applications to the state fund that awarded $4.5 million to a Perry donor under unusual circumstances.

The Democratic challenger and former Houston mayor also says a criminal investigation should look into the arrangement through which a company founded by Perry contributor David G. Nance won the award from the state technology fund. White made the comments Thursday after touring a machine shop in an industrial area of Fort Worth.

The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday that Nance received the award last year without receiving the endorsement of the regional screening board.

A Perry spokesman said White's remarks show "complete disregard" for a resource that's bringing technology companies to Texas.
