Fifth Annual Hablando Day of Women's Health

Amarillo, TX - Many uninsured Hispanic women don't get screened for common health conditions, due to language barriers or money.

Saturday the Laura W. Bush Institute for women's health did their part to help raise awareness on the issue.

The Fifth Annual Hablando Day of Women's Health Event took place at the Amarillo Civic Center.

Saturday's event gave Spanish speaking women an opportunity to learn about proper health screenings in a bi-lingual environment.

Women got screened for such things as breast cancer, cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure.

The Laura W. Bush Institute hopes to get more uninsured Hispanic women to focus on their own health, before its too late.

"Some people won't experience great symptoms until later in life. It starts off with smaller symptoms, such as those higher cholesterol, and may grow into a bigger problem."

Along with free health screenings women also took classes that reminded them of some simple every day routines that could help improve their health.

"I remembered to do things that I normally forget to do during the day like put on moisturizer, put on sun block, eat the right amount of vegetables."

Saturday's event featured keynote speaker, and our sister station colleague Telemundo Anchor, Maury Roman-Jordan.
