APD Warning... Don't leave mail in your mailbox

Amarillo, Texas - Leaving your mail in the mailbox for the postal carrier to pick up could be opening yourself up to trouble.

The Amarillo Police Department says thieves are stealing checks from mail boxes all around the city.

Cpl. Jerry Neufeld with the APD says, "What they're looking for is people's checks that they're writing out to the electric company or the gas company or to whoever. They take that check and chemically wash it and basically now they have a blank check that they go to any store in town or check cashing places in town, write it out for whatever amount they want and walk out the door."

To protect yourself, police recommend that you take your outgoing mail inside the post office, where it can't be stolen.

Dropping it into the blue collection bins outside the post office isn't necessarily safe either, because thieves have been caught stealing from those as well.
