Needy Doubles in Panhandle

AMARILLO, TEXAS - More people than ever before in our area are asking for help paying their utility bills. More than double the amount of local families are getting help from Panhandle Community Services compared to last year.

That's up from just under 5,000 households in 2009 to well over 10,000 so far in 2010. PCS says the increase is made mostly of new families that have never had to ask for help before.

To continue helping more people, the group is planing 15 visits to rural communities before the end of December. They say a lot of people can't even afford to drive into Amarillo to seek help.

They also expect the need to go up as winter hits - that's because bills are usually higher during that season.
