Judge asked to declare executed Texas man innocent

AUSTIN, Texas — Prosecutors are fighting a new effort to clear a Texas man who was executed for setting fire to his home and killing his three daughters.

Judge Charlie Baird will convene an unusual court of inquiry hearing Wednesday. The Innocence Project filed a petition asking Baird to declare that Cameron Todd Willingham was wrongly convicted of the 1991 deaths.

If Baird were to clear Willingham, it would mark the first time an official in Texas formally declared someone was wrongly executed.

Williamson County prosecutor John Bradley says the Innocence Project's effort is a politically motivated attempt to undermine the death penalty.

A disputed arson finding from a pair of fire investigators is at the heart of the case.
