CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Clovis zoo officials are one step closer to filling a tall order.
The Clovis City Commission has approved a $15,500 budget transfer that will allow Hillcrest Park Zoo staff to pay for the acquisition and delivery of a male giraffe currently owned by The Disney Company.
The zoo wants the giraffe as a companion for their girl giraffe Jael (JAY'-ehl).
Jael is in her gestation period and zoo officials are hopeful the pair can create three to four offspring.
City Manager Joe Thomas says the total cost of the giraffe is $30,500 - $25,000 for the animal and $5,500 for transportation. The cost is defrayed by a $15,000 donation from the Citizen's Bank of Clovis.
