Ride inspections... an inside look

Amarillo, Texas - As you head out to the fair this week, there are dozens of people behind the scenes making sure your visit is a safe one. There are 42 rides at this year's Tri-State fair and each one is inspected at least once a day, if not more.

Independently contracted inspectors who've gone to ride safety school walk around with a clip board check list one hour before the rides open. They look for everything from pins in the right place to properly greased gears to rust and general wear and tear.

But those daily inspectors aren't the only ones who look at the rides.

Crabtree Amusements Brandon Kibby says, "Once a year the state sends out inspectors to take a look at our rides and make sure they're okay. They let us know any problems they see and then we have to fix those problems and then report that back to the state."

The rides also undergo an inspection before the fair's opening day... Kibby says that inspection is more thorough than the daily ones. Inspectors typically spend between 10 and 15 minutes looking at each ride.
