Amarillo, Texas - Many crimes are on the rise in Amarillo.

The FBI releases crime stats every year, and the newest reports show there were over 100 more violent crimes committed in Amarillo in 2009 than in 2008. Property crimes also jumped up... By about 800.

That means more burglaries, more thefts and more vandalism. The Amarillo Police Chief tells us more than three-quarters of the crimes in the city are committed because people are using drugs and alcohol.

The Potter County Sheriff echoes that, saying increased drug use is most likely to blame for the rise in crime. Sheriff Brian Thomas says, "whether they're addicted to it or they are turning to it to deal with the economy and the stress that comes along with it, drug use most definitely fuels property crimes."

In many cases, people are stealing from homes and cars only to turn around and spend that money quickly on drugs.

Amarillo Police are now adding extra patrols around the city in areas where they specifically know crime is happening, at times of day/night when crime tends to happen most frequently.
