Amarillo, TX - There are changes in the way veteran's families can receive benefits in Texas.

Surviving spouses of veterans killed in action will now be able to receive discounted home loans through the Texas Veterans Land Board.

For nearly 30 years, the board offered the low interest rate loans to solely veterans until this month.

The wife of a Texas marine killed in Afghanistan attempted to qualify for a loan, but under the statues, she did not meet the requirements.

"The question was asked well if 30% of disability would qualify, this marine gave his life, why should this not apply to a surviving spouse?  There was no good reason and so we changed our policy.

Here's how the loan works, disabled veterans and now surviving spouses can receive up to $325,000 on a 30 year loan for a home.

Their interest rate is about a half percentage point less than other loans offered through the commission.

Texas is one of few states that has a commission to offer separate loans that can be combined with VA funding.
