Downtown Debate

AMARILLO, TEXAS - Anger is growing in one Amarillo neighborhood as many there feel jilted by the downtown revitalization efforts, it's part of an ongoing debate over what should or should not be considered a residential neighborhood.

The 20 square blocks North of Buchanan Downtown is mainly made up of homes, but they were not listed as a single family neighborhood district like this more historic area South of Buchanan was.

The battle line residential border is all part of the new urban design standards. Those regulations are supposed to give downtown a better look by controlling things like landscaping and architecture.

Downtown Amarillo says because there is already some industrial proprieties in the area, the neighborhood's future is uncertain. That's mainly why they didn't get the label, but the program is willing to re-examine the area's lack of a residential label.
