AMARILLO, TX - An innocent game turns tragic, when a young boy accidentally shoots his toddler sister in the head. Friday night, the child was listed in extreme critical condition at the hospital.

The 22 month old girl was inside a back bedroom with her siblings in their on Redwood.

Investigators tell NewsChannel 10, around 9:30 Thursday night, her brother found a small caliber handgun inside the bedroom closet and fired the weapon.

Police tell us the boy is well under the age of ten.  At the time of the shooting, five young children were inside the home.  The children's mother and grandmother were outside the house.  No charges have been filed against either adult, but that could change as the investigation continues.

'Right now our biggest concern is to take care of the children, get them some help.  Let mom, grandma and the rest of the family spend time with the 22 month old and hopefully she'll recover." said Special Crimes Unit Lt. Gary Trupe

With the shooting accident, police remind gun owners to keep guns unloaded, locked away or secured with gun locks.

By federal law, you now have to receive a gun lock when you purchase a gun.

If you don't have a gun lock you can find them for free by heading to the Potter or Randall County Sheriff's offices.  The Amarillo Police Department also has cable gun locks available.
