Ground Broken On New Borger Hospital

BORGER, TEXAS - It may be a pile of dirt now, but Hutchinson County residents will soon have a brand new health care facility.

After years of trying to find a place for the new hospital and funding for it, ground was broken Wednesday at the site of the new Golden Plains Community Hospital.

The existing hospital is more than 80 years old and has undergone several renovations.  Still, it is not as up to date as people would like.

The administrator says the new hospital will be.

CEO Dennis Jack says, "we have newer radiology, new security system, new infant abduction system, all new telemetry to make sure we keep our patients safe."

The new facility is 70 thousand square feet with 25 beds - which is as many as there are now.

But, Jack believes the technology advancements will be more attractive to doctors and keep them in the community.

Right now, a lot of patients must travel to Amarillo or even farther to get certain kinds of care.

The new hospital may ease those burdens.

It was paid for by federal stimulus money and a loan from Happy State Bank, after residents voted down a $25 million bond.
