Amarillo, TX - Amarillo is making history by taking the first step on the largest water project ever to come to our area.

On Tuesday, the Amarillo City Commission decided on 1 contractor to build the Potter County Wellfields. The commissioners began this process 1 year ago when the wellfields were approved.

The wellfield will bring 20 million gallons of water a day by 2040. It will also serve as a backup for the day water is no longer pumped from Lake Meredith.

Director of Utilities Emmett Autrey says this is big step for the City of Amarillo. "This means that we can now begin that process with making sure all of the paperwork is completed with the contractor and it will be about a year from now," he said.

The funding for this project comes from a low interest loan from the state's water infrastructure fund. Autrey says people in Amarillo may receive a 10% increase on their water bills this October to help fund this project but that has not been approved yet.
