Potter County gets raises, despite million dollars deficit

Amarillo, Texas - Operating in the red and still giving raises to all the employees... After a contentious meeting Monday morning, Potter County Commissioners gave the go-ahead to increase the payroll.

The raise discussion took up the better part of the hour long meeting... And by the end, they approved the 2% across the board raise 4 to 0. That applies to both elected officials and hired employees.

This comes at a time when Potter County is operating with a deficit of $1.3 million. Still, commissioners are adamant they've made the right decision, especially since it's been several years since anyone received a raise.

Joe Kirkwood says, "We were very happy that we didn't have to raise taxes for taxpayers and still give our county employees raises. And much of that is because the county employees work so hard. They have been bringing in a lot more revenue in the departments where we can collect fines and forfeitures."

Commissioners did have to make some cuts to be able to afford these raises. They say the cuts will most likely go unnoticed to the public though... things like slashing office supply budgets and cutting back on technology upgrades in certain departments.
