New Flu Shot Provides H1N1 Protection

Amarillo, Texas - Even though it's only August, doctors and pharmacies in Amarillo are already preparing for flu season. NewsChannel 10's Kristen Guilfoos spoke with health officials today who say this year's shot is the only one you'll need to prepare yourself.

A year and a half after widespread H1N1 panic swept across our area, the World Health Organization is now declaring the H1-N1 pandemic is officially over.

But that doesn't mean you should let you guard down... It just means the virus is now acting more like the regular flu, and it's not spreading like wildfire worldwide. There is still concern about it though, which is why this year's flu shot will have built in H1-N1 protection... All the more reason, doctors say to get vaccinated.

BSA's Infection Prevention Nurse Charlotte Wheeler says, "A lot of people sometimes don't understand how dangerous it really is. It affects five to twenty percent of all of the people around the world. We see over 200,000 hospitalizations every year. We also see 36,000 deaths. It is very dangerous."

Pharmacists we spoke with say it's not too early to go ahead and get vaccinated now... Federal health officials are already tracking flu outbreaks in Iowa, which could indicate a more aggressive flu season is to come.

We checked with several pharmacies around the area.

All the Walgreens should be fully stocked with flu shots by August 12th.

CVS expects to have them in sometime during the third week in August.

All of the other pharmacies we spoke with say they should have them by September first.
