Potter Co. Fire Department asking for help

Amarillo, Texas - The Potter County Fire Department Chief is saying enough is enough. Over the past year, he's watched the volunteer fire fighting staff drop to half of what it used to be.

He has a plan to make your family safer by attracting more volunteers. One of the biggest reasons volunteers aren't lining up to fight fires is that they can't afford to.

Volunteers often respond to emergencies in their own vehicles, using their own gas... Without reimbursement. But Chief Lake wants to change that... He's asking Potter County Commissioners to chip in some extra money to pay the volunteers back... Hoping that will make the job more attractive.

Commissioner Joe Kirkwood says, "Money is always tight in the county and we certainly are doing our best to avoid any tax increases this year but we feel like there ought to be a way that we can get the volunteers money for gas to run the calls."

Kirkwood adds the commissioners still have to vote on it, and even if they decide to say yes, they won't be able to give them much.

They'll discuss the Chief's request at their meeting next week.
