Amarillo Memorial M-60 Tank is going somewhere else

Amarillo, TX - The M-60 tank outside of The Old Potter County Courthouse has been there for 17 years as a memorial for those who served in the First Gulf War, but today it was decided that it will go somewhere else.

The debate on whether to move the tank has gone on for more than a year - but today that comes to an end. It will be moved, but will stay in our community and it's headed to Ellwood Park. Its removal was requested by the state because of the renovation of the courthouse and it didn't follow certain requirements.

"Through the court reservation the state has required us as a strong request to remove the tank," Commissioner Alphonso Vaugn said, "We've been working with the City of Amarillo and other entities the PRPC and the United States Department of Defense."

Commissioner Vaughn says with Judge Ware not there it was hard to make the decision, but he says they have discussed the removal and he was excited about the project.

"I think by moving it in that location it will still be in the confines of our community and certainly Potter County as well then he is ok with it," Vaughn said.

You can see the tank outside of the courthouse now, but commissioners plan on it being in Ellwood Park by next summer.
