AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - A Potter County sheriff's deputy killed a 58-year-old gunman suspected of fatally shooting a grandmother who was protecting her 12-year-old granddaughter from being kidnapped.
Amarillo, TX - We have new details on what could have led the suspect to kill Sharrel Blankenbaker and his attempt to kidnap 3 girls Tuesday evening. NewsChannel 10 spoke with Special Crimes today and they say Gary Don Carner, 58, was on pain medication following surgery, and he had changed prescriptions days before this tragic incident.
Before Carner shot and killed Sharrel Blankenbaker,63, of Flint Oklahoma, he tried and failed to abduct a 31 year old and a 12 year old girl. After the shooting he forced an 11 year girl who was walking with her friend along Indian Hills road to get inside his truck.
What led to him doing this is still unknown and Carner's family told police this is out of character for him. Investigators are working on getting an entire list of medications Carner was on and they are continuing to find out anything as to why Carner did this.
