Xcel issues energy alert for NM, Texas customers

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Xcel Energy for a second day is asking customers in New Mexico and Texas to conserve energy because of expected high electric demands and limits on its generating capacity.

The Amarillo, Texas-based utility issued an energy alert Wednesday and asked customers to limit electric use through 7 p.m. to reduce the strain on the power grid. Customers were also asked to conserve on Tuesday.

Xcel forecasts indicate that unless customers cut back, demand will exceed the amount of electricity the company will be able to supply. Failure to reduce demand could result in controlled outages within the region.

Xcel spokesman Wes Reeves says the utility should be able to produce enough power, but customer conservation would help the utility get through the day.
