Amarillo, Texas - This hot weather is knocking out power around Amarillo. Xcel Energy is concerned it could happen more and more frequently if everyone doesn't help out.

It's definitely the kind of heat that makes you want to run inside. But hundreds of people in Amarillo actually wanted to run outside on Monday, because this was the cooler option.

Their air conditioning went down when power outages spread through several neighborhoods. Xcel says they're not surprised... With weather this hot, it doesn't take much to overload the system.

On top of that, they had an unexpected maintenance issue at one of the power plants, cutting back available energy by quite a bit. Under normal circumstances there are a few things you can do to help make sure the power stays on in your neighborhood.

Wes Reeves says, "You need to be very careful about their air conditioning because that's what tends to drive that peak demand up at the end of the day. If you're leaving your house, leave the unit on, but leave it somewhere in the 80s. Then as you come in, gradually reduce that, and try not to go below 78 degrees on your thermostat."

Also on the list... Not using your washing machine, dryer or dishwasher until after seven tonight... That's the magic time when electricity use starts to drop off, so there's less of a chance the systems will be overloaded.
