Thousands of rig workers eligible for grants

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana charity estimates up to 9,000 people will be eligible for grants from a $100 million fund to help struggling oil rig workers idle because of the federal moratorium on new deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Gulf Coast Restoration and Protection Foundation, an affiliate of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, will take applications from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 from rig workers seeking grants.

The applications will be graded against each other to determine need, before any dollars are doled out. That's according to John Davies, head of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation or BRAF.

Grant checks ranging from $3,000 to $30,000 - depending on financial hardship - will be mailed in October.

BP donated the money for a Rig Worker Assistance Fund and chose BRAF to administer it.
