New Road Money Could Dead End

AMARILLO, TEXAS - New roadway construction in the Panhandle could stop completely as soon as 2012 unless something is done soon.

Stimulus funds will be gone by then, as well as money from bonds issued under 2008's prop 14. There is also a strong possibility that other funds could be canceled due to budget shortfalls.

"We're looking at a serious decline in the letting of new contracts. certainly, there's not going to be a lot of work in the Amarillo area as far as new roads. and we'll be lucky to get the money we can just to maintain the roads that we have," TxDOT Spokesman Paul Braun said.

This news comes as TxDOT announces almost $22 million worth of new area projects today. Those are being funded by a mixture of state and federal money.
