AMARILLO, TX - City officials voted unanimously to adopt a downtown revitalization project, Tuesday.

The Downtown Amarillo Urban Design Standards will bring new trees, sidewalks and lighting to Downtown streets. The standards will require building to now meet aesthetic regulations.  Buildings are now grand fathered in as they are currently.  When owners decide to make outside changes, they will have to implement the regulations.

Several business owners tell NewsChannel 10, they hope the plan will breathe new life into their business. Owner of Just Tees'n, Jan Douglas, has been in business at the exact spot for more than 20 years. She plans to re-model her shop soon and doesn't mind the new regulations.

"I have to tell people where we are. I say, Have you ever been to downtown before? They say no, " she expresses to NewsChannel 10.

Businesses are not the only buildings that will have to make changes. Homes in the downtown area fall under the plan as well.

Historic district resident Sonya Parmer says she live in a 100 year-old house that constantly needs repairs to maintain it.  Now, she will have to stick to city's new codes, and they are not affordable"

" I believe its going to decrease people's ability to pay for their own homes. I think in the end its going to cause low income housing in the area and push people into homeless situations" said Parmer.

Parmer says, she and many of her neighbors in the same economic bracket, are for the revitalization for businesses only.
