Police kill suspect in Texas child's death

MINERAL WELLS, Texas (AP) _ A man who slipped away from police as he was being questioned in the kidnapping and death of a 4-year-old boy in north Texas has been fatally shot by police.

Mineral Wells police say 23-year-old Arturo Pacheco-Barrera was shot and killed about 2 p.m. Sunday in a rural area about 7 miles south of the city. Police Chief Mike McAllester said the shots were fired after the man was surrounded and refused orders to surrender.

Pacheco-Barrera had escaped from Mineral Wells police Friday night while was under questioning in the disappearance of Salvador Briones Jr. Police say the child's body was found behind a vacant house a few hours after he was reported missing from his parents' home.

Mineral Wells is a city of roughly 17,000 residents about 50 miles west of Fort Worth.
