Amarillo, TX - Cindy Whitney, 54 was an active member and Treasurer of the Old Tascosa Cycling Club and some of her close friends say she was the safest rider of them all. She was killed Saturday July 17, when Gaige Sippy of Canyon took his eyes off the road when his cell phone fell to the floor board. DPS Troopers say when he looked back at the road, it was too late. Whitney was pronounced dead on scene shortly after.

The family says the best help for them would be evening meals, If you would like to help them please visit the Old Tascosa Cycling Club link for more information.

When it comes to what Amarillo is doing about this, Kenneth Graham, Whitney's cycling friend and group member says some things have been in the works and there are positive things in the future.

"The city of Amarillo has taken great strides in recent years to promote bicycle safety with our bicycle plan," Graham said, "Which includes bicycle routes and bicycle lanes in the city that plan is in the process of being updated and approved by various commissions."

Graham added there is still much needed work and they are working to get a Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator that will work with TxDOT, Potter and Randall Counties, and other surrounding cities.

"The City of Amarillo is well underway in having a comprehensive plan for the next 5 to 10 years," Graham said, "Within that plan there is a chapter on mobility within that chapter the words bicycle, bike, pedestrian, walking comes up over 30 times."
