Mosquito problem really bites

Amarillo, Texas - The mosquito problem is growing faster and faster, and the City of Amarillo is having a hard time keeping up.

Add up the more humid than usual weather, hot temperatures and the standing water from the onslaught of rain we've seen lately, and you're looking at a mosquito's dream come true.

It's one the worst years in recent memory as far as those annoying little bugs go, and the City of Amarillo is having to ramp up efforts to minimize the problem.

They have three crews working practically around the clock.

The City's Vicky Covey says, "The most effective way to treat mosquitos is to treat them before they hatch and that's called larvaciding. We go where there is standing water, in ditches, along the playa lakes, and we treat that water with laravacide that kills it before it hatches."

On top of that, they've increased the number of nights they're spraying... They're out there at least five times a week. One of the easiest ways for you to help the problem is to take care of the standing water in your own yard... That means bird baths, kiddie pools or even dog bowls.
