Ute Lake Drowning

From New Mexico State Police:

Ute Lake—The New Mexico State Police Search and Recovery Dive Team has recovered the body of a 31 year old Portales man. His name is being withheld until his next of kin can be notified.

State Police were called to Ute Lake early Friday July 9th by two women who were swimming withthe man when he disappeared. The three were swimming about thirty meters off shore after midnight. The two women then swam back to shore and heard splashing and shouting but thought it was the man's continued horseplay and not a call for help.

When the women couldn't find the man they called State Police for help. The man's body was recovered from the lake early this Friday afternoon. His body will be sent to OMI for an autopsy.

It is suspected that alcohol may have contributed to this tragic occurrence.
