NM police recover body from Ute Lake

LOGAN, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police divers have recovered the body of a Portales man who apparently drowned in Ute Lake.

Police say the name of the 31-year-old victim is being withheld until his relatives can be notified.

Authorities were called to the lake early Friday by two women who were swimming with the man when he disappeared in the water.

The women say they swam back to shore and heard splashing and shouting, but they thought it was the man's continued horseplay and not a call for help. But when the women couldn't find the victim, they called police.

Authorities say the body will be sent to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy. They say alcohol is suspected as a factor in the apparent drowning.
