Floods Close Streets, Trap Campers

Canyon, Texas - Heavy rains from last night caused flooding all across the Panhandle, closing Highway 60 going westbound, from the Potter County line to FM 2161.

As of Thursday afternoon, that westbound lane remains closed.

Heavy rains also caused flooding in Palo Duro Canyon, causing water crossings to be covered with water, trapping the campers who were staying there.

In some places, the water is six feet deep. In others, it's about one to two feet deep.

Park Rangers say they expect TxDOT crews to help clear the water and relieve some of those campers, but they're not sure how long that will take.

We're told there are still a few camping areas before the flooded crossing that are open, but rangers say it's probably best to avoid camping in the area until the weather subsides.
