Amarillo, TX - Hundreds of vacant homes in Amarillo have many homeless people finding shelter, and now the city is putting an end to the issue. With over 300 abandoned homes in local neighborhoods, many residents have filed complaints stating they have seen transients go in and out of the homes.

City Building and Safety Director Scott McDonald said that they are currently going through background checks of the vacant property owners and taking steps towards a solution. The solution being demolition of the homes.

"We will provide notice to the owner and they then have an x amount of days to comply with providing that the structure is safe and not open for individuals," McDonald said, "and as those steps work or don't work then we'll take additional steps to further that it's secure."
