AMARILLO, TX - Local merchants are seeing the green side to red, white, and blue.  The Independence Holiday has wrapped up with businesses reporting more and more Texans visiting the Panhandle.

According to the Amarillo Tourist and Information Center, more than 1,600 visitors stop by throughout the July 4th weekend every year.  In recent years, the number of visitors coming to Amarillo from far away has dropped.  However, there has been a hike in the number of visitors from Texas and neighboring states, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

"They are not traveling as far. The good thing is they are staying in Texas and they are staying overnight in Amarillo.  That's good news, we're getting some good tourism dollars, " Daphne Adkins of the Amarillo Tourist and Information Center, tells NewsChannel 10.

Co-owner of The Big Texan, Dan Lee sees the same trends.

"The numbers are up at both places. It shows that people are out on the road, looking to spend more locally or they just want to get out and have a good time," said Lee.

Lee and Adkins hope the money staying in-state will continue to flourish.  Both are optimistic of this upcoming summer.
