Funeral held for soldier from Oklahoma Panhandle

TURPIN, Okla. (AP) _ A Fourth of July funeral service has been held for a soldier from the Oklahoma Panhandle who died in Afghanistan.

The Turpin High School auditorium was packed Sunday for the service. A U.S. flag was draped over the coffin of 27-year-old Army Spc. Jared C. Plunk, and to the side was Plunk's high school football jersey.

Plunk died June 25 when his mounted patrol was attacked in the Konar province. The men were assigned to 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

Stan Lehnart, a minister who spoke at the funeral, praised Plunk as a "hero'' who "gave his life for us to sit here today.''

Plunk was buried at the Liberal City Cemetery in Liberal, Kan.
