Amarillo, Texas - Fireworks season is officially here... Thursday marked the first day they can be sold in Texas.

Firework sales are expected to boom this year, and it's all because the grass is no where near as dry as it was last summer.. Meaning the fire risk is down.

But the risk of getting caught doing something illegal with those fireworks is going up... Amarillo Police are increasing patrols to catch you if you break the law.

That means possessing, selling or setting off fireworks within the city limits. Sgt. Brent Barbee says, "We get a lot of calls about what's legal and what's not. Those little poppers that you throw on the ground, those are okay. All the others are not. That means fire crackers, sparklers, bottle rockets."

The APD usually puts available overtime hours towards extra patrols in high crime areas. But between now and the fourth, they'll be used for firework crackdowns.

If you're caught violating the fireworks law, you could face a fine of up to $2,000.
