Generous donation allows Amarillo man to walk again

Amarillo, Texas - An Amarillo man who thought he'd never walk again took his first steps on Wednesday afternoon.

After suffering from diabetes for years, 60-year-old Leo Hawk lost the bottom half of his left leg at Christmastime... Amputating it was the only way to save his life, since it was taken over by gangrene.

Since then, he's been confined to a wheelchair, because he didn't have any insurance to cover or money to pay for a prosthetic leg.

That's where Cliff Mahaffey comes in... He's been making prosthetics in Amarillo for two decades, and decided he couldn't let Leo go on living like that, so he gave him a prosthetic leg for free... Something that usually costs around 8,000 dollars.

"I always think it's pretty cool to see the look on their face when they take those first few steps, especially when it's been a while since they've been up and walking. You can just see it in their eyes. It's very fulfilling."
