Amarillo, TX - Thousands of people in our area are treated for substance abuse every year but now a funding shortage threatens their recovery. Amarillo Council On Alcoholism and Drug Abuse helps many people try and stay sober by treatment and group meetings and even with their funds declining, their patients are still continuing to fight.

Cassandra Mejai, 29 has been sober for more than 90 days, "I was a person that I never thought that I was going to be the person that I am here today," Mejai said. For 15 years Mejai struggled with alcoholism and with 5 children and a husband she says she was ready for a change. "When I came walking through these doors I had no husband no family no anything and I know that today is a better day and they show you that here."

Amarillo Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse opens its doors to thousands of patients every year but this year director Samantha Patterson says could be different. "The overall funding was cut by about 20% so it just wasn't available," Patterson said.

"We won't turn anybody away we never have we never will we'll just continue to see them with less money."
