Companies ask judge to end drilling moratorium

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ The government says it needs more time to study the risks of deepwater drilling, and learn how to make it safer.

Government lawyers asked a federal judge in New Orleans today to leave in place the six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling.

But companies that carry people and supplies to the offshore rig argued that the ban should be lifted.

A ruling is expected later this week.

The moratorium was ordered by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It affects 33 projects that were under way when the BP-operated rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 workers, and sank two days later.
