Violent Crime on the Rise in Amarillo

by: Kristen Guilfoos

Amarillo, Texas - After a year of a near record low crime rates, Amarillo's crime activity is back up. The increase is showing up in violent crimes... Which, in general, are things like murder, rape, aggravated assault and robberies.

That doesn't mean our city has fallen into total lawlessness... Murder and rape actually went down from last year.

It's the other violent crimes that contributed to the uptick... We saw about a hundred more aggravated assaults, 700 more property crimes, and thirty more robberies.

Amarillo Police say they're not sure what they did differently in 2008 that contributed to the low crime rate, but they're working diligently to get those numbers back down.

Sgt. Brent Barbee says "We have a crime analysis division that does nothing more than make sure all the sectors of our department are communicating and that we know what's going on. The continued effort is through hotspot, meaning we have to direct our efforts to the right places and to the right people."

Police say they need your help finding those hot spots... There's a lot of area to cover and only so many of them to do it.

So if you see anything that's even slightly suspicious don't hesitate to call it in. Better to be safe than sorry.
