Protecting Your Kids From Dangerous Parasites

by: Kristen Guilfoos

Amarillo, Texas - It's a dangerous water parasite we first told you about last summer... And now big steps are being taken to protect your kids from getting sick.

Splash Pads are scattered all around Amarillo and before now, public spray grounds like this were not regulated by any health or safety code.

But thanks to a new state law kicking in just in time for summer, that's all changing. The state government is mandating these splash pads be treated the same as public pools. They're giving operators three choices.

Deree Duke, the city's Environmental Director, says they can fix it "through a secondary water treatment that involves ultra violet light or ozone to kill the parasite. Hyper-chlorinate, which means raising the disinfectant levels that is far above normal operating procedures. They can conduct tests and actually test the water for the parasite."

The parasite they are all aimed at getting rid of and preventing is crypto... It thrives in water and infects your intestines. Rmt live leaking diapers and people going to the bathroom in the water are to blame for it.

The easiest way to catch it is by drinking the water. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramps.
