Fill the boot fundraiser

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Fire Department's, "Fill the Boot Campaign", wrapped up Saturday afternoon with some changes that helped this year's collection totals.

The annual fundraiser helps support local children with Muscular Dystrophy Disease.

This year, firefighters held collections at three locations instead of ten, with more firefighters at these locations.

The three-day collection drives were held at 45th and Coulter, 34th and Bell, and I-40 and Ross.

Last year, firefighters collected just over $21,000. This year, firefighters were able to surpass that total in just two days.

"We use this money locally to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Our MDA summer camp is coming up the first week of June. A lot of this money will send kids to camp. So they could have a week at camp."

The collections are being counted tonight, so firefighters won't have an exact total until later next week.

The "Fill the Boot Campaign" has been going on for over 50 years. Firefighters who work the event in Amarillo do so as volunteers.
