Amarillo, Texas - Billions of dollars are up for grabs for small businesses, and many don't even know it's available.

More than $2 billion worth of state contracts are available to businesses that are hub certified. That stands for historically underutilized businesses, specifically those owned by women or minorities.

Texas mandates state agencies to do a certain amount of business with those that are HUB certified, favoring them in several situations when it comes to accepting bids for contracts.

Those contracts cover everything imaginable. Edmond Esparza with the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission says, "Construction for new buildings by the universities, or TX DOT, or any other state agency. Or it can be annual contracts for their furniture, their supplies."

Getting HUB certified isn't complicated. To qualify you have to have at least 51% of your company owned by a woman or a minority. You also have to be a US Citizen.

There will be a hub conference on June 2nd at the Amarillo Civic Center, where there will be match-making opportunities between state agencies and local businesses.

It costs $10 a person. For more information or to register, contact Bryan Glenn at WTAMU. His phone number is 806-651-2105. His email is bglenn@mail.wtamu.edu.
