Amarillo, Texas - Dozens of local businesses are banding together sending one big message to Amarillo residents... and that is shop here at home.

The project kicked off Tuesday... It's called Shop Smart, Shop Local. Chamber President Gary Molberg says it's all about getting the word out... Letting people in Amarillo know that it literally pays to shop in town.

"For every dollar you spend here it turns over and over and over again. It stays here in our economy. It's money we use to pay for police, firefighters, ambulance services, money to pave roads with. It's all very important."

For every one dollar you spend in our local economy, you pay 8.25 cents in sales tax... Of that money, two pennies stay in Amarillo.

While that may not seem like a lot, the chamber is hoping this most recent push will make people see that when everyone shops here, those two pennies add up pretty quickly... And good thing too, since it costs about $138-million a year to keep basic public services up and running around the city.
